The next talk for Yorkley History Group is on Wednesday 1st November at 7.30 pm at Yorkley Community Centre when Roger Deeks will talk on Brass bands in the Forest of Dean and Yorkley Onwards. £2 for non-members to cover hall hire and a cup of tea.
There will also be a display in the Centre from 4pm – 7pm. (See below)
Summary of Talk
Roger Deeks will talk about the emergence of Brass Bands nationally and locally, and their persistence in the Forest of Dean. The Brass Band movement formed one of the most accessible routes to music for working class people in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The talk will address the question of why this phenomenon and their associated band rooms became a feature of the industrial landscape and why brass bands have persisted, particularly in the Forest of Dean.
Brass Band Memorabilia – Display
Members of the The Forest Musical Landscape will be available in Yorkley Community Centre from 4pm until 7pm on Wednesday, 1st November if members of the public would like to bring band memorabilia – pictures, programmes, instruments, uniforms etc., related to Yorkley Onwards or other bands, to discuss and have photographed.
